What Is Modular Design, And Why Is It Important In The Space Industry?

Modular satellite design uses interchangeable parts that can be repaired, upgraded, or replaced instead of only used once. This approach can extend a satellite’s lifespan, reduce waste, and decrease the need for total satellite replacements.

Modular components can also support in-orbit servicing, where robotic or human missions replace outdated systems while the satellite remains in orbit. This helps lower the cost of launching new satellites and reduces the accumulation of unnecessary space debris. By minimizing the need for new hardware and launches, modularity supports long-term sustainability in space operations.

Another key benefit of modularity is adaptability. Instead of designing a new satellite for each mission, space agencies and private companies can repurpose existing modular systems, cutting down on production waste and improving efficiency. At Serenity Space Technologies, we’re applying these same principles to CiTRS—the Cislunar Transfer Ring Service—a conceptual transfer stage at the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) stage that’s built for flexible cislunar transport using configurable, flight-proven components.
